stars, sex and nudity buzz : 11/26/2012

This is closest I could get in getting the confirmation on Kate Mara nudity in House Of Cards. I e-mailed one of the actresses who auditioned for the role of Zoe Barnes. The catch is I really didn't know if there was nudity requirement for the Zoe role. Here is where you apply the baiting process by feigning knowledge of something you're practically in dark about:

As you can see, the actress concerned did not dispute about the nudity requirement for Zoe Barnes character. The usual reaction will be 'The role didn't have nudity tag on it' or 'I'm sorry but you got your info all wrong. There is no nudity for this particular part'. Instead she griped about the usual on-cam nudity crap I come to associate with nudity dodgers. Time and desperation will eventually soften her stance.

Hi Roger,
Ever hear of this? Harvey Keitel got fired from Eyes Wide Shut for cumming in Nicole Kidman's hair? Was interested in your take:
http://www.rawbw.com/~zero/funny/hair.html
-Spyral
Unsubstantiated rumors. Nothing more nothing less. Stanley Kubrick is a very meticulous director with a perfectionist streak. He wants his actors to be exclusively available to him during the period of the shooting. The fact it took more than a year for Kubrick to complete the production took a massive and ultimately fatal toll on his health.
imagebam.com
Harvey Keitel was a busy man those days and he just couldn't live in London for nearly a year. Kubrick with his multiple takes and constant reworking a scene didn't gel with Harvey's minimalist approach and tight schedule at that time.
Flexibility is key part of his relationship with a director and the producer. That's why Harvey had such arduous association with Martin Scorsese before a falling out between the pair. Coppola wanted Harvey as Willard in Apocalypse Now but the tough guy from Brooklyn threw a tantrum on the set and picked fights with the crew leaving Francis with no choice but to replace him. Harvey is certainly his own man and modeled himself after Brando particularly when it comes to discussing scenes with the director. Unconventional and a socialist (a dirty word in America) at heart who goes all out to help out struggling and upcoming film-makers, Harvey has a healthy disgust for the Hollywood establishment believing they're ripping off the smaller guys in the biz when it comes to sharing profits.
I don't think Harvey ever released any sort of memoir or auto-bio but if he does, I'll be first in line....
imagebam.com
Like I wrote before and I stand by the assertion - uber-gorgeous Nicole is one cold human being. Not in the literal sense of the word. She is basically shy (owing to mini skin disorder), withdrawn and maintains almost ridiculous distance between her and folks on the set including fellow actors. Professionally frigid. There is no way Harvey will be so aroused by the sight of naked Nicole he blew his load all over her in the name of acting!
imagebam.com
You will never use the words 'Nicole' and 'passionate' in same sentence in reference to her demeanor or even screen performances. There is a sense of detached artificiality to her acting that puts off to large extent discernable viewers and critics. But she successfully manipulated the public and Hollywood into believing she was the victim in the break-up of her marriage to Tom. The Aussie stopped her increasing but subtle attack on Tom when he famously uttered "Nicole knows why".
imagebam.com
Strange that rumors and gossip abound during filming of Eyes Wide Shut beginning with Tom Cruise sexual orientation and ending with R. Lee Ermey revelations few years later.

Making of 'The Shining'
This documentary is followed around Jack Nicholson as he prepared for the "Here's Johnny!" scene and interviewed the actors about their relationship with Stanley Kubrick, the scripts and scene.

Merlin: Syfy TV Series Ending, No Season Six

Merlin TV show ending As suspected, the fifth season of Merlin will be the TV show’s last. The news was confirmed today by a press released issued by the BBC. Merlin is produced overseas and licensed worldwide. It’s seen on Syfy here in the states.

The fifth and final season of Merlin is currently airing in the UK and the two-part series finale will air at Christmas. Syfy will begin airing the 13 episodes of season five on Friday, January 4th. The series finale is expected to then air in late March.

Here’s the press release which includes statements from castmembers Colin Morgan, Bradley James, Katie McGrath, Angel Coulby, and Richard Wilson.
It was announced today that the current series of Merlin will be the last as BBC One’s hit show reaches a spectacular conclusion this Christmas. The epic family fantasy drama will bow out with a special two-part finale, as this unique re-telling of the Arthurian legend reaches its natural and dramatic end – it’s not to be missed!
Merlin has been enthralling audiences on Saturday nights over last five years, consistently attracting an average audience of over six million viewers, with ratings for the current series peaking at 7.1 million.
Merlin has been a firm favourite with BBC One viewers since its first outing in 2008. Celebrated for its magical storytelling, cinematic visual effects and most of all the wonderful cast which includes Colin Morgan as Merlin, Bradley James as Arthur Pendragon, Katie McGrath as Morgana, Angel Coulby as Guinevere, Anthony Head as Uther Pendragon, Richard Wilson as Gaius, and John Hurt as the voice of the Great Dragon.
Co-creators and executive producers, Johnny Capps and Julian Murphy, confirm the current series will be the last: “This is the series where the storylines truly reach their apex. We always felt the story of the legend was best told across five series, leading to a spectacular finale that draws on the best known elements of this much-loved story and brings to a conclusion the battle for Camelot.
“We’d like to thank the amazing cast and crew for their professionalism and dedication, the BBC, FME and all of our partners globally for their incredible support and encouragement across the last five series.
“But chiefly, our thanks go to Merlin’s remarkable and loyal audience around the world for their enthusiasm for the characters and Camelot universe.”
Danny Cohen, Controller, BBC One, said: “Merlin’s mix of magic, adventure and humour quickly became a hit with BBC One audiences and has continued to thrill families over the last five years on Saturday nights. I admire the creators’ decision to end Merlin on a high, but also know that we will miss it in the BBC One schedule.
“On behalf of BBC One I would like to thank Shine and all those involved in the making of the show both on and off screen. I hope fans will tune in over the coming weeks to see the spectacularly dramatic final episodes, and we have ambitious plans for new drama in the Saturday evening slot in 2013.”
Colin Morgan (Merlin) said: “From the beginning this was always going to be a five year journey that we embarked on and I think the show has run its natural course. The show has grown and grown each year and now we’ve arrived at its strongest point and we’ve achieved what we set out to do… I know this is the end, and I know this is goodbye, but thank you for being there on the journey with us because it has been a lot of fun!”
Bradley James (King Arthur) said: “The Merlin years have provided me with fond memories, great experiences and beloved friends and all the while we were supported by a devoted fan base who made the show a unique, surreal and special experience. My words won’t do justice to the honour of being King Arthur so I shall just say that it has been an exceptional one and that knowing the show has been a part of so many people’s lives, has been humbling.”
Katie McGrath (Morgana) said: “I have always said the success of the show has stemmed from our audience being able to relate to the characters on different levels – being based on the universally loved Arthurian legend is only a tiny part of its success – it’s a story about acceptance and growing up. The breathtaking finale of this series leaves you with no doubt that characters have been on their journeys and had their stories told – it’s completely the right time to draw our telling of the story to a close.”
Angel Coulby (Guinevere) said: “It has been a very special and memorable five years making Merlin. I feel extremely proud to have been part of such a brilliant show and such a great team. I think we’ve told the story we set out to tell, which ends with the fantastic two-part finale by the way! I believe the key to any successful show is making sure you leave people wanting more!”
Richard Wilson (Gaius) said: “Firstly, I would like to say that I’m extremely sad that Merlin has come to an end. Speaking as Gaius, I feel I have mentored the young wizard as far as I can – he is much smarter and greater than me now and I am simply exhausted!”
Other memorable cast include Mordred (Alexander Vlahos) and the brave Knights of the Round Table Sir Leon (Rupert Young), Sir Percival (Tom Hopper), Sir Gwaine (Eoin Macken) and the late Sir Elyan (Adetomiwa Edun).
Merlin has attracted an astounding array of guest stars including Michelle Ryan, Santiago Cabrera, Emilia Fox, Asa Butterfield, Mackenzie Crook, Adrian Lester, Warwick Davis, Miriam Margoyles, Eddie Marsan, Will Mellor, James Cosmo, Lindsay Duncan, Janet Montgomery, James Fox, Tom Ellis, Nathanial Parker, Michael Cronin, Charles Dance, Gemma Jones, Sarah Parish, Miranda Raison, Ben Daniels and John Lynch.
Across five series writers Julian Jones, Jake Michie, Lucy Watkins, Howard Overman, Ben Vanstone and Richard McBrien have taken the characters on a spectacular journey.
Series five opened to a Camelot at the height of its ‘golden age’, but a menacing omen overshadows Arthur’s future and unknown threats emerge from within the castle walls. Now everything Merlin has tried to protect is in danger. Albion’s dark trial has begun and the final battle has been joined, but who will survive?

Do not miss the last ever episodes and the dramatic conclusion of Merlin on BBC One, Saturdays at 8pm.
Merlin is executive produced by Johnny Capps and Julian Murphy for Shine Television, with Bethan Jones executive producer for BBC Wales. The series is a BBC Cymru Wales Production and was commissioned by Ben Stephenson, Controller BBC Drama Commissioning and Danny Cohen, Controller BBC One.

Created and produced by Shine TV, Fremantle Media Enterprises (FME) are an investor in Merlin and hold the exclusive distribution (excluding UK), home entertainment and licensing rights to the property.
* There are lots of Merlin fans out there but for me this is actually good news in long run. Katie McGrath in recent interviews has hinted of working on shows like Game of Thrones and have no issues of being stereotyped in same villainous roles. Depending on her level of nudity in Labyrinth, I can safely speculate Katie on cusp of thirtieth birthday in 2013 will shift her attention and career to Hollywood (or audition for very ambitious sounding sci-fi show “Incursion” from “Spartacus” creator Steven S. DeKnight) for at least a year - giving it her best shot. My nudity crystal ball feels she will snare a part or guest star on a cable series, bare her breasts and continue on that path just like her compatriot Jaime Murray who got naked out of blue on Dexter when she was around the same age as Katie.

The First Photo from Eli Roth's Hemlock Grove is a Romp Through the Graveyard

Early next year, Netflix gets in on the televised horror game with the original series Hemlock Grove and it's doing so with the help of Eli Roth.  No start date has been announced but as of a few weeks back, when ShockTillYouDrop.com spoke to one of the stars, the show was still in production.
Today, the first photo from the show - in which Roth serves as an executive producer and director of episode one - hit the web and you can find it inside.
Lili Taylor, Landon Liboiron, Famke Janssen, Bill Skarsgard, Dougray Scott, Freya Tingley, Aaron Douglas and Penelope Mitchell star in the series which is based upon the book by Brian McGreevy.
The show revolves around the murder of a young girl found close to the former Godfrey steel mill. The suspects in her killing include Peter (Liboiron), a 17-year-old Gypsy kid from the wrong side of the tracks, and Roman (Skarsgard), the arrogant Godfrey Scion, whose sister Shelley is disturbingly deformed and whose mother, Olivia (Janssen), is the beautiful and controlling grand dame of Hemlock Grove.

Missy Peregrym: Wonder Woman Looking For Boyfriend
Zennie Abraham

flipstickitdisney031 300x151 Missy Peregrym: Wonder Woman Looking For BoyfriendWhen an actress with the celebrity status of Missy Peregrym uses Twitter to announce her desire to meet a man, you know she’s serious. That’s what Missy Peregrym – who would make a great Wonder Woman – has done of late.
Missy Peregrym 4 300x225 Missy Peregrym: Wonder Woman Looking For BoyfriendThe woman who was once linked to Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Rothlisberger and stars on Cybergeddon and on the ABC Police Drama Rookie Blue and Heroes before that, is looking for a man in all of the places, including the gym, where she’s working out with weights in the process:

And if that weren’t enough, Ms. Peregrym, who first hit it big, and this blogger means BIG in 2006 with the movie Stick It (and sending her into super-star-status on Google search trends) sent out this Twitter tweet on November 17th:

But back to Wonder Woman, Missy has said she would like to play the role of Diana Prince:
wwks 223x300 Missy Peregrym: Wonder Woman Looking For Boyfriend“Actually, I’ve been pushing for that for so long because I know the guys who are trying to develop it and it’s been forever that they’ve been trying to get this script going. We’ll see what happens, but of course, that would be huge to play that.”
And where “that” is, is Warner Bros has hired Michael Goldenberg to write a script, and since that happened in July, he should have some draft of it out there, by now. If Missy wants to play the role, she should put on a costume, as they’re easy to get, and make a YouTube video of herself in the role. That would be huge.
It would effectively catapult her into the buzz-machine for the movie, and go so viral, Warner Bros would have to be stupid not to pick her. Nothing against the last actress to play Wonder Woman, and in the unaired NBC Pilot, but Missy’s got it.
And that Missy’s without a boyfriend shows you what’s messed-up about us Men today. Er, or, uh…Missy, what’s up, girl? You don’t need to go after the man; let the man come after you.

Sex tape of Chongqing official and 18-year-old mistress leaked (UPDATE: Official sacked)

Images have emerged in the last few days purporting to be of Chongqing Beibei District boss Lei Zhengfu having sex with his 18-year-old mistress.
chongqing-sex-tape.png
While we at Shanghaiist would not want to risk committing libel by saying definitively that the man in the photos is Lei, we must point out that there aren't that many Party officials who look like a frog trying to concentrate on two things at once.

Lei Zhengfu
Chongqing's Discipline Inspection Commission is looking into the allegations, their initial investigation has revealed that the video has not been faked or manipulated.

Netizens have nicknamed the official 'Edison Lei', in reference to the Edison Chen sex-tape(s) scandal which was covered in detail by Shanghaiist at the time.

Ji Xuguang, an investigative journalist who broke the story, has announced on his Weibo account that he has more evidence against the official which he has so-far held back due to its explicit nature. It's worth noting that the angle from which the video is shot seems intended to capture Lei in the act, rather than for personal pornographic gratification, suggesting that either the mistress or someone with access to the hotel room recorded the video secretly.

Lei was apparently contacted about the sex-tape before publication, he told a reporter "These are all fake. But I just will not take any action against you guys." Which is perhaps the lamest defence a Party official has yet to produce.

Accusations have also been made against Lei that he took advantage of his position to give his brother, a contractor, lucrative public works contracts. The brother, Lei Zhengkui, originally a farmer, has become a multimillionaire allegedly due to Lei's largesse with regard to construction projects.

Update #1: And he's gone! Reuters reports that Lei Zhengfu has been sacked following an investigation by the Party's discipline watchdog which confirmed it was him in the video.

Chongqing sex-tape scandal: Photos of Lei's mistress emerge, Bo Xilai and Wang Lijun implicated

lei-sex-tape.jpg
More details have emerged (CN) about disgraced Chongqing official Lei Zhengfu and his 18-year-old mistress, a sex-tape of whom was leaked last week.

Zhu Ruifeng, the Chinese reporter who originally broke the story, has identified the woman in the video as Zhao Hongxia (seen below), who was one of a number of young, attractive women provided to Lei as a bribe from developers.

Between 2002 and 2006, while Lei was Dianjiang County Party Secretary, he allegedly took advantage of his position to grant a number of lucrative contracts to his brother's construction company, pocketing a large sum of money for himself in the process. By 2007, after Lei had been promoted to Vice Party Secretary of Chongqing's Jiulongpo District, Lei's personal fortune had grown to the extent that developers effectively found him impossible to bribe.

One developer discovered Lei's weakness for women however, and set about hiring a number of attractive young girls, all under 20-years-old, and using them to set a "honey trap" for Lei. The women, after becoming Lei's mistresses, would secretly video themselves having sex with the corrupt official, giving their employer leverage over Lei.

In 2009, the developer fell out with Lei and threatened to blow the lid on Lei's affairs. Lei allegedly then went to Bo Xilai, at the time one of the most powerful men in China and a future Politburo Standing Committee member, and told him about the tapes. Wang Lijun, Bo's police chief who would eventually cause his downfall, opened an investigation into the matter. The developer who had attempted to blackmail Lei was jailed for a year on a charge of "carving an official seal without authorization from the government", Zhoa Hongxia, Lei's "mistress" was also detained.

Zhu claims to have similar sex tapes of at least five other officials with young girls hired by the developer to entrap them.

Do you have any information about this story? Shanghaiist will pay for unreleased photos/video of Lei or other Chongqing officials' sex tapes. Email james@shanghaiist.com.

* This isn't something new. It happens all the time in every part of the world especially in third world and developing countries where morality takes a backseat to financial needs. These women are well educated but chose to be prostitutes and groomed to be one by the company hiring them. "We don''t have an opening right now but we feel you will be perfect for another job. It pays well and you'll be financially independent within months...
In US it is much more subtle. Folks looking for favorable outcome in their dealings with the scumbag-in-charge is used as a money proxy to take care of their own interest. For instance he is sugar-daddying a college kid but the funds to meet her requirements comes from the developer (the length of the arrangement depends on the project completion) so nothing is traced back to him.

Porn stars and the naked truth
Women in the industry are healthy rather than exploited, claims new study

Female porn stars are psychologically as healthy or healthier than other women, according to a new study, which challenges widely held views about women in the adult entertainment business.

Adult entertainers were found to have higher self-esteem, a better quality of life and body image, and to be more positive, with greater levels of spirituality. They also had higher levels of sexual satisfaction and, perhaps unsurprisingly, many more partners than other women.

The American researchers, who report their findings in the Journal of Sex Research, said they found no evidence to support the "damaged goods hypothesis" that actresses involved in the porn industry come from desperate backgrounds and are less psychologically healthy compared with typical women.

Some descriptions of actresses in pornography have included attributes such as drug addiction, homelessness, poverty, desperation and being victims of sexual abuse," they said. "Some have made extreme assertions, such as claiming that all women in pornography were sexually abused as children. Stereotypes of those involved in adult entertainment have been used to support or condemn the industry and to justify political views on pornography, although the actual characteristics of actresses are unknown because no study on this group of women has been conducted."

The psychologists compared data taken from 177 adult entertainment actresses with a sample of women matched for age, marital status and other factors. The actresses, all of whom had been paid to work on at least one X-rated movie, ranged in age from 18 to 50, with an average career in the industry of 3.5 years. More than one-third were either married or in a serious relationship, and 44 per cent were single.

One of the main claims by commentators on the industry has been that actresses have frequently experienced sexual abuse in childhood, but the results show no statistically significant difference between the two groups of women.

The study also shows that the actresses sleep better and have more energy. Almost 70 per cent gave enjoyment of sex full marks, compared with 33 per cent of the other women; and they had first had sex at a lower age: 15 rather than 17. On the negative side, industry workers had a history of more drug and alcohol use, and problems possibly linked to sensation-seeking personalities. The study was undertaken by researchers at Shippensburg University, Texas Woman's University and the Adult Industry Medical Healthcare Foundation.

Cynthia Graham, senior lecturer in health psychology at Southampton University, said: "This study really challenges views about women who engage in sex work and the porn industry. Although the study had limitations, it is one of very few that has included matched controls."

The feminist commentator Dawn Foster criticised the study: "It is dangerous to generalise about a huge industry: women who are successful and in control of their careers in one pocket don't speak for women in the less scrutinised parts. The study's main objective seems to be to prove that not all women in porn are exploited: no one has argued that. But glossing over the exploitative aspects helps no one."

* for every (and aspiring) GWC out there, the following steps are required before you can earn her trust.....and in time she will be comfortable enough to pose nude for your 'private' collection. Even if she was a 'non-nude' model. You just pay above the normal rate if she was a first-timer as well.

Learning How To Work With Models

When I started the journey of becoming a photographer I thought all I had to know was how to take pictures.  When you are training to work as a photographer you learn about lighting, composition, f-stops, and shutter speeds. No one tells you about the other aspects of starting a business that are, at times, more important.
If there were one single factor that will aid your success as a photographer, it would be learning how to work with people. For the moment, let’s forget these people are models or clients. Let’s just see them as people. It is important to take the title away and learn to relate to people no matter their occupations, model, celebrity, CEO, or otherwise. Working photographers, no matter what segment of the business they are in, have to deal with others. Even if you shoot landscapes and still life, people hire you and you have to effectively interact with them if you want to continue getting new projects.
Recently I taught a 5-day workshop in Seattle on Working With Models at CreativeLIVE that focused on teaching photographers how to work with models. America’s Next Top Model winner, Yoanna House from season two, joined me by teaching models how to work photographers in Modeling 101. I started my segment of the workshop by talking about a book that has helped me time and time again in my career: How to Win Friends and Influence People, by Dale Carnegie. This book has helped me achieve success in more ways than learning about lights, cameras, and composition. If you want success in photography, I would start by first reading this book, and then once a year take the time to read it again. It is well worth the time.
Ten Tips from How To Win Friends and Influence People (that has helped me while working with models)
  1. During your 1st meeting with a model take the time to learn about their hobbies and interests beyond modeling.
  2.  During the photo shoot complement her often; be lavish in your praise! You will create better images and create a fan at the same time.
  3.  Make your model feel like she is a part of the collaboration in more ways than just being a model. Ask her, or him, for their input on your concept.
  4. Always have visuals for your models. These visuals can be sketches or magazine tear sheets, a drawing on a napkin, or any visual that helps show the subject your idea.
  5. Communicate with your models using sight, sound, and touch. Sight: show them your idea so they can visually see what you want to achieve. Sound: tell them in your own voice what you want from the shoot. Touch: let them hold your visuals so they connect and feel like they are part of the concept.
  6. When photographing the model use their name often throughout the photo shoot. The sound of their name is the most beautiful sound on earth. Don’t shorten their name unless you are sure they are fine with that.  An example would be Matthew vs Matt. All my friends know I hate Matt and only call me Matthew.  At times I get request from people wanting to work with me and they will address the email as “Hi Matt.”  I never read those.
  7. Take the time before the shoot, during, and after, to make your models feel like they are the most important person in the world.
  8. Once you find out your subjects interests outside of modeling, talk in terms of their interest, not yours, during the photo shoot.
  9. Do not criticize, condemn or complaining to the model during the photo shoot about anything. Keep the energy positive.
  10.  Give honest and sincere appreciation about their job as a model after the photo shoot. Give praise where praise is due.
Always Dream Big!

What the Dickens? Erotic fiction is now 4,000% more popular than high quality literature as passion for 'mummy porn' sees off the classics
Fifty Shades of Grey has sold more than 40 million copies since it was released in May 2011 and the vogue for erotic fiction is showing no sign of slowing down.

What's more, according to new research, sales of so-called 'mummy porn' are even outstripping those of work by the likes of Charles Dickens and Jane Austen.

Along with Fifty Shades of Grey and its sequels, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed, Sylvia Day’s Reflected in You is topping the erotic fiction charts and sold 100,000 copies in its first week.

And it isn't just the classics that are suffering from the rise of erotica.
According to data from Rakuten’s Play.com, the UK public is overlooking award-winning literature, such as the Man Booker Prize shortlist, in favour of E.L James and co.

Although the quality of the writing in erotic novels has been questioned, erotic fiction accounts for a whopping 14 per cent of all books sold on the Play.com, whereas Man Booker Prize authors account for a tiny 0.4 per cent.
Since October, the erotic fiction category has received 4,000 per cent more searches than Man Booker Prize shortlist.

While the film version of Great Expectations is expected to do well, the book is losing ground to erotic fiction
Adam Stewart, Marketing Director at Play.com, said: 'Although we weren’t surprised to see an increase in sales of erotic fiction on the site, we were shocked at how much they are outselling award-winning novels such as Hilary Mantel’s Bring up the Bodies.

'It shows that the Fifty Shades phenomenon is well and truly alive, and customer engagement with the genre looks set to remain.'

Although the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy remains the best known erotic title, author E.L James isn't having it all her own way.

Recent data has revealed that Sylvia Day’s Reflected in You is outselling the Fifty Shades trilogy.

On Play.com, sales echo this trend, with Sylvia Day’s Bared to You trilogy currently accounting for 36 per cent of all erotic book sales.

Nevertheless, Fifty Shades of Grey fever hasn't waned entirely: the first book still receives more than 100,000 searches per week on the site.

Other popular erotic titles include Indigo Bloome's Destined to Play, Vina Jackson's Eighty Days Yellow and Marina Anderson's Forbidden Desires.

* old article but worth the read if you're interested in discovering one of the main reasons for recent spate of newcomers including female breakaways from theatrical background are resolutely stepping into world of cable show nudity. The sluggish stage scene with poor attendance and crappy pay in wake of economic slump is pushing many of its talents into unfamiliar terrain of on-screen sex and nudity.

WHY I AM NOT GETTING AUDITIONS I WANT THIS PILOT SEASON!
by John Brantley Cole, Jr (March 22, 2010)

This was sent by my agent on why ACTORS aren't getting the auditions they want during PILOT SEASON:

2010 Pilot Season – The “NAME” GAME RULES
As Marc Hirschfield recently said in the Hollywood Reporter, “I think this is probably the most competitive pilot season in about eight years ....” (HR, March 9, 2010). There are fundamentally three reasons for this being one of the most competitive pilot seasons on record:

1. Market Competition I: Film Stars Flock to Pilots
2. Market Competition II: Limited Number of Projects
3. Market Competition III: Complications of “Second Positioning” on Pilots

MARKET COMPETITION I:
TOP LEADING MEN/WOMEN OF FILM – TV DOING 2010 PILOTS
The 2010 Pilot Season has been marked by yet another strong paradigm shift in the industry. coming over to Pilot TV in droves.Dustin Hoffman (who hasn’t done TV since 1967) is just one of many FILM stars or film’s leading men/women who have found their way over to Pilots. Here is a non‐comprehensive list of a few who have:

That coupled with the sheer volume of NAMED TV actors who also are signing up for Pilots increases the competition even further for non‐NAMED actors. Here again is a NON‐COMPREHENSIVE listing of established TV leading men/women who have signed on with Pilots:

As an agency, PTG has seen strong positioning of our actors for Series Regular roles. We have had 44 actors go out for Series Regulars in these pilots. That is a very strong showing. However,I have spoken with many of my peer agency owners, and we all have had the same experience this pilot season: we have concluded that most of these auditions are what I call ‘insurance auditions.’ Insurance if the actors who been offered the role do not take the role.

I have pitched to at least 50 CDs this pilot season who all said something along the lines of ‘yes, this client might be right‐on for the role, but the studios/networks are saying STAR NAMES ONLY, and we have an offer out.’ This goes for both my ‘named’ and heavy ‘working actors.’ And for the rest, unfortunately, the days of developmental and semi‐working actors getting a shot at a series regular or recurring role on a pilot are long gone (please see below in market competition II).

MARKET COMPETITION II:
THE CONTINUED DECREASE OF PILOT WORK
Unfortunately, the days of shooting hundreds of pilots are long gone. This paradigm shift occurred due to the WGA strike which allowed studios/networks to restructure how they do business in developing and producing new shows. Shooting a pilot is a very expensive proposition, and now the number of pilots are limited to those which have a great chance of getting a green light or have already been green lit for the fall season. In short,
last year there were 69 pilots and this year 83 (including pilot presentations). This year the market will probably end up at around 65‐70 real pilots shot.

(SIDENOTE: Furthermore, the WGA strike also allowed the studios/networks/cablers to provide for pilots year round instead of the primary pilot season as we had all come to know and expect. The good news is more pilots to come throughout the year;. The bad news is that the exclusivity provisions are no longer in place so named actors can do multiple pilots a year if they so choose, instead of being limited to one during traditional pilot season and thereby opening up roles for other non‐named actors. In short, more competition with Top Named actors!)

Doing the Math: So, if you calculate that there are 70 pilots being shot this year, with an average series regular cast of 5‐7 (some shows are going to as low as 4 series regulars to save costs), we are talking between 350 and 440 ‘job openings’ in Hollywood this pilot season for top roles. Above, I have already listed 85 roles taken, and that was far from an exhaustive list. To complicate things even more, many strong series recurers and established TV actors with heavy credits from TV shows are vying for the 250‐300 roles that are left. For example, everyone formerly on ER has found a pilot. Finally, what I am hearing from CDs is that even named actors and VERY STRONG working actors are doing Guest Stars on these pilots. So again, the days of a developmental or semi‐working actor finding a spot on a Pilot is highly unlikely.

MARKET COMPETITION III: SECOND OPTION POSITIONING
To make matters worse, some actors with current shows are doing pilots as second position. For example, Allyssa Milano, who is currently on Romantically Challenged, has signed on for Hall Pass as a second option. Kyle Bornheimer, also on Romantically Challenged, has signed on for the Bays/Thomas Project. Rob Morrow, of Numbers fame, is currently second positioning on “the Whole Truth.” The entire lead cast of Better off Ted also was confronted with this opportunity. The show, not performing highly in the ratings, found each one of these actors being offered and accepting second options on pilots.

While this has gone on for years in Hollywood, the rise of competition for named actors/actors currently on TV has led many Casting Directors of Pilots to aggressively pursue currently employed actors. Also a few actors such as Jerry O’Connell have been able to do two pilots as exclusivity provisions did not apply. Again, this just shows that there is a strong demand for named actors/actors on TV, and the networks and studios want established names to push for advertising money up front.

(SIDENOTE: Do not forget, the Up‐Fronts, while again having gone through a paradigm shift of their own, are still an imperative positioning place for networks. And network executives obviously feel that TOP NAMED actors will allow them to secure as much Up Front advertising dollars as possible. We are talking billions of advertising dollars committed at these Up‐Fronts and it seems as though NAMED actors are what is selling that ‘Up‐Front’ dollar right now.)

Final Thoughts from James J. Jones*
I send this pilot report to my clients in order for them to fully understand the business nature of this – the 2010 Pilot Season. While the trickle down nature of this pilot season (top named stars getting series regulars, top working actors getting series recurers/guest star, guest stars doing co‐stars, etc) is fairly bleak for developmental and semi‐working actors, it is not permanent. The prospects for scripted television on both cable and networks, as well as the increase in new media and feature film production bode very well for the actor. For my developmental and semi‐working actors, please be realistic about your expectations and focus on your craft and getting me the marketing materials I need to do my job. For my ‘named’ and heavy working actors, please understand the level of competition, and be patient... breakthroughs are undoubtedly coming for what should be a vibrant 2010. In short, hang on – work your craft – and stay positive! Good things will happen!
